The hanging of Saddam Hussein was met with mixed reactions from around the world. Certainly, no one expected to see video footage of the hanging, especially those who do not support capital punishment in any case. But for countless other’s Hussein’s execution meant that justice had finally prevailed after decades of repression.
The Iraqi government convened an inquiry into the secret filming of Hussein’s execution which included audio of Hussein and his handlers. The audio is mostly of verbal abuse from the executioners toward Saddam Hussein. This compares with the official video in which there is no audio and the filming stops just after the noose is placed around Hussein’s neck.
Saddam Hussein’s execution opened up a Pandora’s Box in the international community.
Italy’s prime minister has stated that his government will take the issue of capital punishment to the United Nations pushing for a moratorium on capital punishment. The Council of Europe calls the death penalty uncivilized and cruel.
On the other side of the issue are the millions who died at the hands of Saddam Hussein’s government and the millions more who lost family and loved ones in horrible conditions. There needs to be room in the debate for these souls as well.
